The Downtown Development Authority (DDA) is a funding tool Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. (DGRI) administers to help catalyze public and private investment in Grand Rapids' urban core.

The DDA Board of Directors today took action on the following measures:

Support for Holiday Lighting Downtown

The DDA Board authorized funding up to $35,000 for the installation of decorative lighting during the holiday season in Downtown GR. The project, identified as a funding priority by DGRI's citizen advisors, also includes a modest expansion of DGRI's 2017 lighting display. The recently completed reconstruction of Michigan Street - which included new power outlets - now enables lighting one of Downtown's busiest corridors. DGRI will partner with Michigan State University to decorate and light Michigan Street in front of MSU's new research facility. Christmas Decor by DeVries will provide the lighting installation services in November 2017.

Support for River Restoration

The DDA Board approved a $100,000 contribution to help Grand Rapids Whitewater cover the cost of of completing an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to assess the ecological effects of restoring the rapids in the Grand Rapids. The EIS is an analysis required by the federal government for certain actions affecting the quality of the human environment. The project costs an estimated $300,000.

Restablishing the Grand River as a distinct asset and a draw to the city and region is the Number #1 goal of GR Forward, the community plan and investment strategy to guide the next generation of growth in Downtown. This includes reinforcing efforts to advance the Grand Rapids Whitewater initiative. The completed EIS is an important tool that will support future decision making about Grand River restoration.

Liquor License for 95 Monroe Center

The DDA today approved a resolution supporting the issuance of a liquor license for Little Bird restaurant at 95 Monroe Center. The proposed restaurant will seat up to 49 and serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. The restaurant estimates employment of15-20 full-time employees.
